Permanent Hair Removal

Laser hair removal technology is the use of an invisible beam of light and a constant source of heat that penetrates the hair follicle, disabling and then destroying it at its root while preserving the surrounding skin.
 
The procedure of removing unwanted hair is simply targeting the follicle and then directing the laser beam at its root. The hair removal process begins as the laser beam finds the hair follicle that it is targeting by first finding the melanin, which is the dark color of the hair.

Many men and women find they have to shave on a daily basis or wax every few weeks in order to maintain a groomed look. The procedures can be tiresome, painful and often expensive especially after unwanted hair continuously reappears.
 
Unlike plucking, shaving and waxing, laser hair removal provides long-term growth delay and permanent hair reduction. Electrolysis treats a single hair at a time, where as laser hair removal treats many hairs at once thus allowing large areas to be treated quickly and effectively.
 
Laser hair removal proves to be more precise, less painful and more cost efficient.

Laser hair removal is appropriate for anyone that has unwanted hair. People of all ages and ethnicities can get successful laser hair removal.
 
However, hair that is grey or light red is very difficult to treat because the laser beam is attracted to pigment (color) of the hair follicles.

The length of each individual treatment varies from patient to patient depending on the size of the area to be treated, type of hair and skin type. Because treating the hair in the active growing phase (anagen) has the best result and because hair grows in three varying stages (anagen, catagen and telogen), it is necessary to undergo several treatments for the best result.

Laser hair removal involves the use of sophisticated expensive laser equipment in order to deliver precise and effective energy pulses. During your initial consultation the areas to be treated will be determined and a fee quote per treatment session will be given to you.

Laser hair removal disables the follicle of hairs in the active growing stage. As all hairs are not in this phase at one time, a series of treatments is necessary. In general, patients require 5-6 consecutive treatments spaced approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve long lasting benefits. Once your treatments are complete, you can expect to come in for a touch up treatment once or twice per year.

The hair grows in three stages and we are trying to synchronize the hair growth to get as many hairs as possible with each laser treatment. The only way to do this is by lasering the hair every 4-6 weeks.
For most individuals, laser hair removal is a very tolerable procedure. On a scale of 1-10 most patients describe the discomfort as minimal, or 3-4. Some describe the procedure as a rubber band snap or prickling sensation. The laser has a Dynamic Cooling Device, which prepares the skin for treatment by spraying the upper layers with a cooling burst of cryogen. DCD helps ensure that the laser treatments are as comfortable as they are effective. There is a stinging sensation felt during treatment, however most patients who have waxed or had electrolysis report that it feels less painful than those types of treatments.

It’s comforting to know what you’ll experience during and after your laser hair treatment sessions. During laser hair removal, you’ll wear goggles so your eyes won’t be exposed to light from the laser. At first, you will likely feel a stinging sensation, indicating that the laser has been activated. The treatment involves a series of impulses that cause prickling and a slight burning sensation. You might also detect the smell of singed hair, which is nothing to worry about.
 
The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the work you are having done. The smaller the area, the less time is involved, whereas a larger area, such as the back, will require more time. After laser hair removal, you may experience brief swelling and redness. Slight redness and swelling around the follicle is normal and is an indicator of a good clinical response. The area treated may feel as though it has been mildly sunburned lasting for about 24 hours. Some people feel stinging and you may also experience a slight crusting of the skin. If the latter occurs, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) should be used to moisten the affected area. Typically, most people don’t have much redness at all. Don’t expect that all the hair will fall out right away — it may take as long as two weeks after treatment.
 
For the most part, you can return to your normal routine immediately, though you should avoid direct sun exposure. Be sure to use sunscreen with a high SPF. Some doctors also advise that you avoid exercise and strenuous activity for the first 24 hours so as not to perspire and cause increased irritation. You should continue to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning booths for several weeks after treatment. Be careful when touching the treated areas: don’t wax or pluck hairs, pick at the skin, or rub or scrub it. A gentle washing with soap and water is perfectly fine.

 

The laser does not remove the hair at the time of treatment. The laser kills the root of the hair follicle; the hair will fall out or be “shed” 1-2 weeks after treatment.

The laser energy interacts with pigment or “melanin” in the hair root, and these hair colors either don’t have much melanin in them, or it is of a type (pheomelanin) that does not absorb light as well as the other form of melanin (eumelanin).

The hair root has to be present for the laser to work, so if the patient has
removed it with waxing, plucking, electrolysis or Nair products, then there is nothing for the laser energy to interact with. You can shave the area, but do not use any form of epilating treatments.

Surface hair, if present will be singed off, increasing the risk of a burn, as well as taking up
energy that does not get to the root of the hair follicle.

Melanin formation in the skin as a response to sun exposure, decreases the effectiveness of the treatment, as well as makes it more likely that the patient will experience hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or blistering from the treatment. Also, very dark skinned people are not good candidates for laser hair reduction because of the active melanin in their skin and could have a reaction.

Yes, with the exception of eyelashes, and the shaping of eyebrows due to the proximity of the eye and the danger of eye injury with a laser.

Most patients experience an 90-95% reduction in the amount of hair in a given
area, but should not expect to be hair free. Normally there are a few thin, willowy, hairs that we
can touch up if they bother you.

Side effects can include blistering, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or scarring. Risks of these side effects are minimized if treatment instructions are closely followed by the patient.

The laser simply and directly pinpoints the root of the hair and removes it from the body. Although the process is precise and beneficial, it can be irritating to the skin — therefore it is important that a cooling device is utilized throughout the procedure for comfort. These cooling systems also prevent the laser beam from causing harm or discomfort to the surrounding skin.

Pigmented Lesion Removal

Laser treatments can safely and effectively reduce the appearance of lesions on any area of the body. A highly focused beam of laser light pulses by melanin-containing skin cells causes the targeted cells to scatter and degenerate while significantly decreasing potential damage to surrounding tissues. Within 4 to 6 weeks, the spots that were treated will slough off.
 

Tolerance of pain varies greatly from person to person. Although many patients say there is little to no pain, some may experience a mild stinging sensation only when the laser pulse is delivered. The cold tip located on the hand piece helps alleviate this sensation by soothing the skin.

Each treatment should take about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the number and size of the area being treated.

Most people begin seeing results after only one or two sessions; however, the average person receives 5 to 6 treatments in order to achieve maximum results. The number of required treatments varies and is dependent on each lesion’s depth and size. It is imperative to use sunscreen on treated areas because sun exposure may cause the lesion to reappear.

Vascular Lesions

A cosmetic laser emits a prescribed dose of energy to the vein. The laser “selectively” targets the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. After treatment, the vessel will naturally disappear.

Tolerance of pain varies greatly from person to person. Although many patients say there is little to no pain, some may experience a mild stinging sensation only when the laser pulse is delivered. The cold spray from the hand piece helps alleviate this sensation by soothing the skin.

Each treatment should take about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the number and size of the vessel(s) being treated.
 

Most people notice results after only one or two sessions; however, in some cases new spider veins may appear so additional treatments may be necessary. The number of required treatments varies and is dependent on each vessel’s depth and size. Results will be noticeable about three to four weeks after the treatment is performed.
